One of the most popular baby gifts, either for a baby shower or after the baby arrives, is the unique and bursting with guide on how to make a diaper cake. These are often the most creative and unique gift expectant parents can receive. And while you can purchase them already assembled, they often cost upwards of $100, but why do that when you can make one yourself?

 This, for those who don’t know, is a structure made up of diapers, or a combination of diapers and other baby supplies. These other supplies can include baby clothes, bath supplies, rattles, bottles, and more. The cakes themselves can be small and only one tier, or they can be large with three tiers or more, although the most common is probably the three tier.

For the larger tiered cakes, 65-100 diapers are needed. If there are things such as onesies, bottles, or toys included, this may reduce the number of diapers needed. They cakes may look complicated or hard to put together, but with the right supplies and a little time, they can be put together quickly and the result is very cute.

The best place to begin is by putting together each of the layers. For the average three layer model, about 65-70 diapers will be needed. First, each needs to be rolled up and secured with a rubber band, this is repeated for every one of the diapers. 

 Once all the individual diapers are rolled and banded, they need to be grouped into circles of different sizes to resemble layers, again this is done with rubber bands. To ensure the layers stay together and it does not fall apart when moved, a wooded dowel much be inserted down through all the layers. These wooden dowels are found at nearly all craft and art stores and are likely found in the cake decorating section.  

Once the layers are all put together, now is the time to start decorating the layers. Sometimes, people place things like bottles and clothing, etc, in with the actual rolled diapers. Other time, they only make the tiers out of diapers and use the extra items to decorate the outside.

 Often times, items are placed on top of this to help it look like a topper. Whatever decorations are done, it looks both unique and practical. Being extremely useful and fun gifts to both give and receive, learning how to make a diaper cake is a great choice.
